CLOSING OF WHITE CITY.

Ugly Men's Association Loses.

'One of the most important develop-ments of the year so far as we are con-cerned,' said Mr. A. Clydesdale, M.L.A., speaking at the annual meeting of the

Ugly Men s Association in the Perth Town Hall last night, 'was the closing of White City. Up to date, so far as we con see, the section of the public who demanded it have not come forward to offer any substitute to the association. We are fac-ing a loss of about £6,000 per annum from that source, and consequently the poor and needy of the metropolitan area will be hard hit. 'Thousands of' applications for assistance are dealt with by us annually, and in future it appears that our funds will be quite inadequate to enable us to dispense charity on the same scale as in the past; but we are not going to show the white feather. Our main source of income having been closed, we will have to find other means of obtaining money. Our commit-ments yearly have been roughly £10.000. and the return from Uglieland, at White City, has been about £6,000. This amount will have to be found by some other means if we are to continue our activities." Suggestions invited from those present included the holding of a ball in Govern ment House ballroom, a monster packet day appeal; carnivals during the summer at Cottesloe Beach and City Beach, and a regatta on the Swan River. Mr. D. N. Martin said he thought all the money required might he got if cricket, tennis and other sporting clubs donated 10/ a week. There were 400 centres in the State, and the association could appeal to .sporting clubs to provide* the amount he suggested. In the metro politan area up to £100 might be raised in each of the big suburbs. Mr. W. H. Downey proposed that sugges tions for raising the money required be in vited from the public. It was decided to await the receipt of suggestions, and to consider them at a delegates' meeting.
