THE CITY OF FREMANTLE.

Proposed Celebrations.

On June 3 Fremantle will be officially declared a city and recently the Fremantle Municipal Council appointed a special com mittee to suggest a programme for the cele

bration of the event. That committee, which consisted of the Mayor of Fremantle (Mr. F. E. Gibson), and Councillors Hollis (chairman) and G. W. Shepherd, has drawn up a programme which will be con sidered at a special meeting of the council to-morrow night. The committee has recommended that at 10 a.m. on June 3 elected representatives of the people and officials should partici pate in the planting of about 30 trees in the Fremantle Park. That ceremony should end before 11.30 a.m. at which time the Mayor and councillors would receive the Vice-Regal representative, bringing the Letters Patent declaring Fremantle a city, outside the Town Hall. The cere mony of declaring the town a city would be performed from a dais outside the Town Hall and the Vice-Regal representative, the Premier (Mr. P. Collier) and the Mayor would make short addresses. The Archbishop of Perth or his representative would offer a prayer of thanksgiving and the people would join in the singing of several hymns. At 12.30 p.m. an official luncheon would be given to old residents of Fremantle, preference being given to residents of over 50 years' standing and Fremantle residents who were descendants of the pioneers of the period from 1829 to 1879.
