ARCHIBALD PRIZE.

Sir John Longstaff Successful.

SYDNEY, Jan. 18.— The Archibald Prize for 1928 was awarded to-day by the trustees of the National Art Gallery of New South Wales to Sir John Long-

staff, for his portrait of Dr. Alexander Leeper, formerly Warden of Trinity Col-lege, University of Melbourne. This por-trait was one of a group of four which at-tracted keen attention from those who visited the exhibition at the Art Gallery after the award was announced. The other three were of Mr. Frank Tate — for many years Director of Education in Victoria — by Mr W B. McInnes, one of Mr. Theo-dore Fink, of Melbourne, by Sir John Longstaff. and one of Mr. Julian Ashton, the well-known Sydney artist, by Mr. George Lambert. The winning portrait, a seated three-quarter length figure of Dr. Leeper, is full of character. A high note of colour is furnished in the scarlet university gown, with amber facings.
