THE PADDINGTON BATTERY

FIRE.

A FATALITY.

BROAD ARROW, February 13.

Mr. McCarthy, amalgamator at the Paddington Consols battery, died yesterday from burns and shock received on Friday night, when the battery was destroyed by fire. He was popular, and there was a very large attendance at the funeral on Sunday evening.

The ruins of the battery are being cleared away. It is doubtful if any of the machinery will be worth erecting again, and probably an entirely new plant will be necessary. The engine was tried on Saturday at high speed, and is apparently all right.

Onlookers state that within three minutes after the fire started the whole building was ablaze.
