PERTH FOOTBALL CLUB.

? ^ , A HaDDV Combination.

, Although the Perth Football Club is in the twenty-ninth year of its existence, the records do not reveal any very great suc

Still the club holds a fair record and at all times has fielded teams which have flayed good football and put up many grand 'mnning performances. There has been a charm of style in the football of Perth in bygone years ?with the beautiful fan movements up in the attack lines that are so pleasing to watch. A little of its noneuccess has been attributable to the fact that the teams have generally lacked the 'punch of power' to carry them through the severe tests at the end of a season. But the players are more solid now and, as ever, are a united and hanpy band. Perth has annexed but one premiership (in 1907) and was in the final in 1904, 1908, 1909, 1913 and 1915. The club was founded by an enthusiastic follower of football, Mr. J. Dixon and sprang from the ashes of the old Rovers Mr. Dixon acted as first secretary. Others to act in the same capacity since have been Messrs. J. O'Loughlin, L. Ryan, Percy Davidson, M. Leahy and W. Stooke. The list of 'presidents reveals many wellknown names in the football world. Mr. A. H. Barleewas the first to occupy the position and others who followed him are Messrs.' Lai Bourke, Bob Hutchinson, H. Stacey, Frank Southee, Jack Orr, Stan Hussey, Jack O'Loughlin and J. Roydhouse. Mr. Hussey was also a captain of the team and was a wonder player on the fringes of the rucks — cool, tricky, strong and neady. The captains of Perth include the names of other ' great players in 'Blinkie' Morgan, 'Poss' Watson, George Moysey, Dave Rogers? St. J. Kennedy, 'Jimmy' Troy, a great player, loved by nil who knew him, who found a soldier's grave in France, Jack Leckie, now a very able coach, Dug Moffatt, Robert Hewson, the present State wicket-keeper, ''Tony'' Tyson, George McKenzie, Wally Stooke, 'Snow' Hewby, Caldwell, ? Langlands, Wally Steele and Albert Watts. Among the many very able players who have appeared in the costume of the redlegs,. Alec Clarke will possibly be the best remembered. A super-ruck man, always full forwards Western Australia has prowonderful games in the packs. One of his best was performed on the clay when he won a block of land at Palmyra which had been donated as a trophy for the greatest playec in a game between Perth and East Fremantle at the Port Oval: As Alex was opposed by the mighty Jim Gullan, his feat was a grand one. Harold Crase was a. sound full back, whilst at the opposite end Perth had one of the greatest full forwards Western Australia was produced in Alfred Halliday. Other great players included Harry Edmondson, Martin Gotz, Frank Jeffery, who afterwards transferred to West Perth, O'Callaghan, Wyatt, 'Chitter' Brown, Frank Deardon, the clever 'Barky' Baile, Dick, Bergin and St. J. Kennedy, the Cherry brothers, Paddy Willoughby, .'Curly'' McCormack, 'Bill' Downey, Eddie Thompson, Arthur McWilliam, Fred Wimbridge7 Ron Southee Cyril Hoft,. Joe Chamberlain,' Baxter and Billv Orr.

But the men most closely connected with the welfare of the Perth Club, and, indeed ?with football generally,' have been Messrs.'A. A. Moffatt and W. Stooke, Mr. Moffatt was delegate for Perth from 1903 to 1919 and since then has. been president ofithe league. Thus Mr. Moffatt has served football in an executive capacity for 26 years. This wonderful . local record is enhanced, by the fact that he has : also occupied the high position of. president of the Australasian Football Council. . Mr. Moffatt was a player of no mean ability and a cricketer, of note. Mr. Stooke has been 'player, secretary, captain and delegate and last'year managed the State team on tour: ( With Mr. Ryan, he is a representative of the.' league on the executive of the W.A.C.A. ground and endears himpelf to all- by his courteous mariner.
