A new departure was taken inconnec- tion with the draw for the lawn tennis championship, which was made ; to-day, at the All England Club, Wimbledon. Not.

only were the players seeded by nations, as in -recent ''years, thus ensuring inter-national character of the later contests, but eight selected players in each of 'the singles, and four pairs in the doubles, were seeded by merit, according to classi-fied ranking, made by a special, commit-tee. The chosen eight in the men's singles weree':— Lacoste (France), Tilden (United States), Borotra (France), Cochet (France), Harada (Japan), Symond (South Africa). Selected women were: — Miss Helen Wills (United States), Mrs. Godfree (Great Britain), Miss Bouman (Holland), Senorita De Alvarez (Spain), Miss Ryan (United States). Mrs. Mallory (United Stages), Miss Heine (South Africa), Mrs. Peacock (South Africa). In the women's singles a feature of the first round will be the appearance of Betty Nuthall.
