Uriarra Bridge. The Minister for Works and Railways advises the Hon. Austin Chapman as follows :-" With reference to your letter of 21st ultimo, covering a com-munication from Mr. Geo. J. Webb, of Uriarra, via Quean-beyan, urging that the bridge at Uriarra, which has been swept away by flood, should be restored, I have communi-cated with my colleague, the Minister for Home and Terri-tories, and from reports re-ceived by him, it would appear that the bridge at Uriarra is only four miles from the bridge over the Murrumbidgee at the Cotter River Junction, and the nature of the country is such that two permanent bridges over the Murrumbidgee within four miles, is not advisable, and the Cotter bridge is a necessity from a Commonwealth point of view. The construction of the road from Uriarra will afford a direct access to the majority of settlers in the locality over a well-graded road, whereas the roads leading to the Uriarra bridge contain steep grades which would be very costly to improve. Messrs. Webb and Milson were interviewed on the site of the bridge and informed of the Commonwealth's inten-tion, and both appeared to be satisfied, provided that the road access would be ready for wool-carting." A Shaughai messages states that 200 persons perished in a fire aboard a river boat on the Yangtse River near Shanghai.
