Southport Jetty.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir—I see by a telegram forwarded to Adelaide in November or December last, the people in Adelaide are led to believe that the celebrated jetty at Southport is being finished— probably the telegram has been misunderstood. You are, of course, quite aware that nothing whatever has been done to that structure, although promised at the end of November last to be completed. I don’t wonder at this, because it would puzzle many wiser men than

we have here to make it available

for the intended purposes.

Private enterprise is now earnestly doing what the authorities here have failed to do, namely, providing a suitable landing place and a bonded store alongside, thus giving facilities to trade, hitherto neglected. It is very possible that the authorities may wake up to the necessity of doing something now that private enterprise is doing it for them. Mark you, I blame no one now for not completing the jetty, as I look upon

the structure as one of a number

unwisely undertaken, and upon which money has been recklessly wasted, and that can be of little or no pratical use.

I am, Sir, &c.,

T. REYNOLDS.
