Football, THE ENGLISHMEN WIN. On Saturday the English footballers played a team representing N S W. The ground was soft, the light good, and the weather fine. There wero fully 30,000 spectators present. The teams were :New South Wales- Back, F. Row; three-quarters, F. Spragg, W. A. Shortland, and O. White ; five-eights, I. O'Donnell, and P. Ward ; half, A. Boyd ; forwards, Wheeler, N. Street, A. J. Kelly, H. Marks, A. Gardiner; W. Davis, Ellis, and Webb.. England - Back, E. ?Martelli ; threequarters, A. Burcher, C Adamson, E Nicholls, G Doran ; halves, G Oookson, M Mullineux; forwards,:F M Stout, T W M'Gowan, J W Jarman, H G S Gray, J Francolub, A Ayre. Smith, HO 0 Benson, G R Gibson. Referee : Mr J F Macmanamey. The game proved a very good one, and was close and exciting. It had been arranged that a player, after it ball is dead, must kick it before it is in play again. Some stmarb work was done by both sides. The N S W. men forced early and then recovered, pinning the Englishmen. Back again to the New South Wales end, and after some good defensive work one of the Now South Wales forwards kicked foolishly at a rolling ball, Adamson it once snapping the chance, and marking in New South Wales' he placed for MIartelli, who at a difficult angle kicked a beautiful goal, a long, low kick. England 4 points. Towards the end of the game, the home team rallied. The back division then gob away, but a little fumbling by White brought the ball back, and from the serum Mullineaux got away with a dribble, until Rowe kicked a rolling ball out of bounds at the centre. Another forward rush by New South Wales, some loose forward play, and then a pass by Gardiner over the heads of the English forwards to Ward, who came up fast on the left wing, and taking clean crossed near the corner, and scored for New Southl Wales, Spragg took the kick, and made a good attempt, though a trifle wide. England 4 points ; New South Wales, 3 points. The game was eventually won by England by 4 points to 3.
