NEW GAS PLANT.

Opening Ceremony To-day.

His Excellency the Governor (Sir Francis Newdegate) will perform the ceremony of opening the Perth City council's new gas plant, in Trafalgar

road, East Perth, at 3 o'clock this after noon, when, in the presence of the Mayor, councillors and others, he will turn on the gas which will supply the metropolitan mains. Out of 16 gas retorts 12 have been finished, and eight are in operation, and, pending the completion of the others, the old plant will remain in commission. The original estimate of the cost of the new plant was £80.000, but extensions were decided on from time to time, with the result that the amount of various con tracts has reached a total of £105.000. The new gas works will enable the council to supply up to 1,000,000 cubic feet of gas per day, a quantity that is just double ithe capacity of the old plant, which will be scrapped at an early date.
