GENTLEMEN,-I have to thank you for

the unexpected honour you have confeired upon me, by the presentation of so influential a Requisition, to allow myself to be nominated as one of the Representatives of this City iu the Elective Assembly.

With evety desire to render what service I can to my fellow-citizens, yet, after much con-sideration, a consciousness of my inability efficiently to discliaige so important n trust, to give to that and the other duties devolving upon me the attention they requiie, and many other reasons, compel me to decline most lespcctfully acceding to your request ; and I feel the less hesitation in coming to this decision, obseiving among the names to the Requisition gentlemen whom I consider in every respect belter qualified than myself.

I have to thank you most sincerely for this expression of your confidence in me, and I shall always have pleasure in rendeiing my .aid in the promotion of whatever may be conducive to the welfare of the colony and the best interests of society.

GKNTLEMEN,

I thank you for the honour conferred upon me by your requisition, that I should become one of the candidates fur the representation of so important a portion of the community us the inhabitants oí the capital of tbe colony.

Tlie satisfaction willi which I regard a requi-sition representing so much of the respectability, intelligence, tind wealth of the community, /loes not wholly remove ihe doubts which I entertain of my ability to fill the office of your representative to your entire satisfaction ; but I shall enter upon it with a deep sense of its importance at this evenilul period, and with a determination to discharge its duties fearlessly and iiiipurtially.

Altliuugh you bave not lequired from me tiny explanation of the opinions by which my conduct ¡is a mern lier of the legislative assembly will be guided, I think ii light to state that, being con-vinced that transportation in any form is fraught with the gieatest evils lo the colony, I shall resolutely oppose all measuies lending to piomule its continuance ; und that I shall also oppose all imposts which can impede the prosperity of our inier-coluiiial Hade.'

An advocate of civil and religious liberty, I have never recognised any invidious distinctions of class or sect in the community, und I conceive that the Act oí Pailiament conferíiujr free insti- tittion's has expressly abolished sta-h distinctions,

by ctitifening equal elective lights upuii all.

Connected willi the colony by emly associations and long residence, my presen I anil prospective interests are inseparable fruin ils wclfatc. I feel grateful for the distinction which yuu would confer upon trie; mid being free from all influences having a contrary tendency, I pledge myself genci.illy to suppurl all measuies which may be conducive lu the prosperity und wollare ol' the commiiuiiy at large.
