STATE WAR MEMORIAL. Fremantle's Effort. ' For the past few months a representative committee at Fremantle has beer. considering the erection of a memorial to fallen soldiers and sailors at the Port, and at a meeting of the general committee on Friday evening a number of matters were finalised. The Mayor. of Fremantle (Mr. P. E. Gibson, .LLd.A.) ~resided over a large attendance. The secretary (Mr. A. J. Lea Holt) stated that the assessors had recommended that the design submitted by Messrs. Wilkinson and Boss, of Claremont, be accepted. The recommendation was accepted, and the second place was awarded to Mr. S. Rosenthal. of Perth. Following general discussion it was decided that as Fremantle was the "door to Australia" the memorial should take the form of a monument to those of the State who fell during the war. The memorial is to be on a most commanding position on Monument Hill, a height which dominates the Port. A sub-committee was formed to solicit the help of the Federal and State Governments and to make personal appeals to firms and individuals, both in the State and elsewhere. Appeals are to be he!l at intervals to help to provide necessary funds;
