ARTISTS COMMISSIONED

FOR JUBILEE WORKS

Three major projects in the field of art will be undertaken as part of the 1951 Commonwealth Jubilee'

Celebrations.

The three projects are the commissioning of seven leading Australian artists for Jubilee works, an art competition with prizes totalling £1000, and a travelling

exhibition of Australian art.

The projects are being organised by the plastic arts committee

of the Federal Arts Sub-committee of the Celebrations.

The commissioned works will be in sculpture, mural painting, figure compositions, landscape and stained glass. The works will be a realistic or symbolical portrayal of some incident in Australian history or depicting the Australian scene or way of life.

The seven artists are: William Dobell and Ivor Hele (figure composition); Charles. Meere (mural painting); Lyndon. Dadswell (sculpture); Hans Heysen and Lloyd Rees (landscape); and D. ' Taylor Kelloch (stained glass). > , , , .'

A work selected from these will be awarded £1000, and become the property of the Commonwealth Government. Each of the six other artists will receive

£150 for each work, and if their works are of sufficient merit, the plastic "arts [committee may recommend their purchase by the Government. - one"

The seven artists were chosen by a panel of artists comprising Will Ashton, Douglas Dundas, Daryl Lindsay, William Dargie, Hal Missingham, and Mr. Charles Lloyd Jones (chairman).

The art competition is open to all Australian artists wherever they are living, for a work of art depicting "the Australian Scene," and expressing something of the essential character

of the country and its people.

First prize will be £500, second prize £300 and third prize £200. The competition will close on June 29, 1951, and is open to both painters and sculptors.

Entry forms will be obtainable from Directors of National Galleries in all States, and A.B.C. offices in all States and London, after January 15, 1951.

Competitors will submit their works in their own State and chosen entries will be exhibited at National Galleries.
