U.S. Has Capital To

Invest In Australia

"A great deal of American capital is available for investment in Australia if co-operation in dollar exchange and import licences can be obtained," Mr. Ashley Buckingham said last night.

Mr. Buckingham, who is manag ing director of Buckinghams anc Curzons, returned by the Monterej from the United States, where h« studied supply, and manufacture

problems.

He said thc textile situation wäs very bad, particularly rayons and cot-ton's, and very small quantities were likely to reach Australia. Seventy-one per cent, of supplies had to be re-tained for thc home market, and the remaining 29 per cent, was distributed among South America, Britain, South Africa and Australia. Mr. Buckinghan ' said he was told that, of the 71 per cent., about 40 per cent, went

on to the black market.

"Australia is not' regarded very highly on the list of oversea buyers because of the difficulty of dollar ex-change and import licences." Mr. Buckingham said. "All goods can be sold on the American home market or in South America."

Film Studio

A suggestion that the Govern-ment should build an up-to-date film studio in Sydney, large enough to make full-length feature films, was made by Mr. N. P. Pery, managing director of Columbia Pictures, Australia,

He said the success of the recent Australian films, including "Smithy," which be produced, had shown that there was a definite market in the world for good films about the Com-monwealth, especially if they bad an interesting story.

Mr. Pery announced that the first film Ron Randell would make when he went to Hollywood would be one of the "Bulldog Drummond" stories.

A night club for Sydney, modelled on clubs in New York and Paris, is
