SOVIET SHIPS PASS

THROUGH PANAMA CANAL ZONE

NEW YORK, Wednesday.

American airmen and troops in the Panama Canal zone were placed under a general alert yesterday. .

Authorities in Panama City

told the American United Press that it was part of a general schedule, but it coincided with the passage of five Russian fish-ing ships through the canal,

Military, police, some armed with light canon, lined the Fourth of July. Avenue, which is the boundary line between Balboa and Panama city.

The Soviet ships were guarded while at Christobel off the Atlantic

side.

They completed the passage without incident and tied up overnight in Balbao anchorage.
