BEATRICE GRIMSHAW.

Miss Beatrice Grimshaw's latest book, "The Little Red Speck" (Hurst and Blackett, Ltd.), consists of a dozen stories with the setting in the South Islands,

mostly grim and tragic, with death lurk-ing round the corner, and not always for the person intended. The name-story, The Little Red Speck, tells of the jealousy of a girl, the daughter of one of the residents on one of the islands and her terrible revenge with a red spider, which, however, carried death to the wrong person. "The Bright Alaris" is the story of a professor's revenge, and the living death of one of the most beautiful islands of the Pacific of an eminent young Irishman. The stories are very interesting, and they are well told, but one is forced to wonder if the beautiful islands hold nothing but hatred and dark intrigue. Our copy is from the Melbourne house of the publishers.
