POLITICS AT GYMPIE.

A public meeting was held at the Varieties Theatre, Gympie, on Saturday evening last, "in order that the present political situation might be fully explained, and the electors informed of

the steps proposed to be taken at the present juncture of affairs." Mr. Tozer, in a short speech, resigned the trust which had been confided to him by the electors, and thanked them heartily for the confidence which they had re* posed in him op the day of the Wide Bay election. He concluded his speech by proposing the following motion, which was carried unanimously :—" That this meeting heartily welcomes Mr. King back to Gympie, and considers that the fact of his having only been in the minority of sixteen is a matter for congratulation; and it now expresses its continued confidence in him." Mr. King addressed the meeting at some length, and assured the electors that "if he were re-elected for Wide Bay he would do his best to represent the district and all classes in it in the same manner as he had hitherto. He most obtain justice for the mining interest, but would not neglect any of his constituents, whether miners, squatters, or farmers." The prospectus of the Miners' Protection Association was then read, the object of which is to promote the progress of the Gympie gold-fields by advocating in every legitimate way the wants and requirements of the district. An entrance fee of one shilling will be charged, and the annual subscription is a similar sum. One of the principal duties of the association will be the registration of electors. The prospectus was. adopted, and the election of the executive committee for the present year will take place on the sth August.
