Landslide Blocks

Lyell Highway

A landslide blocked the Lyell Highway on Wednesday night at the foot of Mt. Arrowsmith, about 35 miles from Queenstown.

About 300 yards of gravel slipped down covering the road for a chain to a depth of 3ft.

Public Works Department men worked all night with a grader and trucks to clear the road.

In the morning light traffic was allowed over the slip. The road was cleared for heavy traffic at 3.30 p.m. Service cars were not delayed.
