SNOW BENDS POLES .ON

LYELL HIGHWAY

STEEL poles erected for a telephone line between

Derwent Bridge and Queenstown have been bent" almost to right angles by the snow.

'JTHE lack of any telephones along

the road at present delayed the clearing of snow from the road, a member of a Public Works Dept. -gang said.

A gang which left Queenstown on Saturday to help to clear the road dug a quarter of a mile through about 8ft of snow.

Members of the gang on the return to Queenstown last night said a PWD

party which had been operating near Derwent Bridge was out of supplies.

It was given sufficient provisions by the Queenstown gang to enable it to carry on until stores could be sent from Hobart.

Mr C. Goggins, who has driven more than half a million miles on the Lyell Highway, said last night the snow was thc deepest he had seen for ll years.

The condition of shelter huts pro-vided along the highway was deplor-able, according to another member of the party. Vandals had broken the windows, making the huts use-less.
