Mr C. E. Davies Appointed Managing

Editor Of "The Mercury"

jyjR C. E. DAVIES, a director of

Davies Brothers Limited, has been appointed managing editor of "The Mercury," and will take over his new duties today. This ap-pointment follows the resignation of Mr Fred Usher from the position of

editor.

Mr Davies who. as a member of the AIF held the rank of captain, has been retired fro.m the Army to enable him to take over this posi-tion. Recently he served with the Army Directorate of Public Rela-tions which controls and facilitates the activities of war correspondents in the field, as well as regulates the passage of news from operational areas to the Press of Australia.

A son of the late Mr C. E. Davies. MLC, who for many years was managing director and .chairman of Davies Brothers Limited, proprietors of "The Mercury." Mr Davies began his newspaper career in Hobart. Subsequently he studied newspaper practice in England. Europe, and the

United States. Before he enlisted he was director of advertising <rf "The Mercury."

Mr Usher, after having been associated with "The Mercury" for 28 years, including 13 years, as editor, relinquished that position yesterday.

At a gathering at "The Mercury" yesterday, a presentation was made to Mr Usher on behalf of members of the literary staff. Messrs R. E. Shone (chief sub-editor) and A. G. Bradley (chief of staff), and Mr C. G. Patman, who had been associated, with Mr Usher throughout his career on "The Mercury,"' expressed to him the good wishes of the staff.
