FLOODS IN W.A.

Washaways on Railway Several Town» Flooded

PERTH, August 9

Floods in tho district served by the Midland Railway Company's line caused washaways in places 10ft. to 30ft. deep, and dislocated road and railway transport. Trains aro held up pending re-ballasting of lines, which is expected to bo com-pleted in time to begin a normal service on Thursday.

The flood extended to the parallel Government Railway, 25 miles eastward, and caused serious washaways between Calingiri and Piawaning. The Midland line is affected over a length of about 150 miles, and several of the towns have been flooded and residents forced to vacate their homes. The flood is rising at Moora. It is feared that many crops have been seriously damaged, although pastoral areas benefited considerably.

The storm extended over wldo areas to the South Coolgardie goldfield, but the Midlands, which received in places nearly live inches, appears to be the only part that has suffered. Falls elsewhere wero not so heavy. The northern areas aro draining into salt lakes to the east, and the southern country will empty Into the Moore River, which flows into the ocean. The weather to-day was fine, but the chart is showing signs of another storm from Cocos Island. Light rain was reported from the greater part of tho State this morning.

FARMS ISOLATED.

' From Mogumber, 70 miles to Minge-

new and 227 miles north of Perth, on the Midland Railway, huge stretches of water cover the low-lying' fields and parts of the roads and railway. Threequarters of Moora Is still inundated to a depth of 2ft. to 3ft, and although flood waters at Coorow, Carnamah, Three Springs, and Mingenew subsided, streets are dee pin mud and slush, and the con-tents of many shops and dwellings are soaked. Many farms are isolated by flood waters, and flocks of sheep are marooned, and in danger of drowning.
