TO THE ELECTORS
CITY OF HOBART TOWN.
GENTLEMEN,
MY Departure for Melbourne renders it
proper that I should explain to you the course which I propose to adopt in reference to the seat in the House of Assembly which I have the honour to hold as one of your representatives.
Under ordinary circumstances I should, of course, resign my seat on changing my residence, but I cannot do RO, in consequence of my appointment as a member of the proposed Conference of Australian Delegates at Melbourne.
That appointment, as you are aware, was made in October last, at which time my intention to reside in Melbourne was generally
known.
I am informed, on good authority, that the Delegates will probably meet before June next, and I think, therefore, that I am not justified in resigning my seat, and so reducing the number of Tasmanian Delegates at the Conference.
If the Conference should meet before June, it may be necessary to justify, or explain, in person at the next meeting of our House of Assembly, the part which I may have been called upon to take at the Conference.
For these reasons I shall retain my seat, taking care, however, to resign it in sufficient time to enable you to elect my successor before the next meeting of Parliament, if the Conference should not meet previously. In the meantime no possible inconvenience or injury can be caused by the retention of my seat, while both might be the result of my immediate resignation.
I have the honour to be,
Gentlemen,
