INTER-STATE 'VARSITY

RACE

Tasmanians' Splendid

Win.

Victory by Two and a

Half Lengths.

BRISBANE, June 7.

The thirty-fourth annual inter-Varsity eight-oared race was rowed over the Ham- ilton Reach course on Saturday afternoon under ideal conditions. It was a perfect day, bright and sunny, without any wind, and there was scarcely a ripple on the water. As a result the crews were able

to give a fine exhibition of oarsmanship. Tasmania passed the winning mark first

with twoand a half lengths to spare, fol- lowed by Sydney, who were about the same distance ahead of Queensland, with Victoria a length and a half in the rear. The course was covered in 18min. 1sec.

THE RACE

The four crews were sent away to a good start at 4 p.m. The Melbourne crew row- ing a fast stroke were first to show out, followed by Queensland. Sydney and Tas-mania. There was little between the four crews for the first half-mile. A great race ensued over the first mile, Queens-land then holding an advantage of half a canvas Queensland were rowing at a slightly faster rate as compared with the other crews. After going 1½. miles Tas-mania spurted, and passing Melbourne, drew level with the local eight. For the next quarter of a mile Tasmania livened up their rate of striking and drew clear of Queensland by three quarters of a length, with Sydney half a length away.

Rowing stcadily the Tasmanians con-tinued to increase their lead, and at the head of the breakwater were a length in front of Queensland.

Over the next quarter of a mile Sydney, who were rowing in beautiful form, re-placed Queensland for second position. They, however could make no impression on the Tasmanian crew whose solid lift and drive carried their boat further ahead with each stroke. At this stage of the race three crews were rowing 32 to the minute. The race had now developed itself into a struggle for second position but from this point onwards the better combination of the Sydney crew carried them ahead. Over the last mile Sydney fought gallantly to overhaul the Tas- manians. They spurted repeatedly, but could make no impression on the leaders who were swinging ahead nicely and easily
