THE BEAUMARIS ZOO.

BIRDS AND ANIMALS TRANS-

FERRED.

OLD MAN KANGAROO DIES.

The work of transporting the birds

and animals from the late Mrs Roberts private zoological garden at Battery Point to the site in the Do main that has been set aside by the City Council for their future residence was begun early yesterday morning, and with the exception of a few varieties of birds was completed late yesterday afternoon. About a dozen men under the supervision of the curator, Mr A A Reid, were engaged in the arduous task, and it speaks well for their carefulness that during the transportation not one animal was lost. However fortune did not alto gether favour them. While feeding the animals in the evening, Mr Reid discovered the old man kangaroo dead in his paddock. The animal was a par

ticularly fine specimen and one that the curator was justifiably proud of. He was very docile and during the journey behaved in his usual good manner. When taken from the cage he hopped about the paddock and appear ed to be in the best of condition. He was not injured at all and Mr Reid surmises that the constant stream of motor-cars that were going past the zoo, frightened the animal and in his fright he must have fallen and broken his neck. Mr Reid was very much attached to this particular animal and was greatly concerned over his death. He estimated his value at between £20 and £30, and states that he will find it very difficult to secure another of the same type.

The lions which are coming from Syd ney, will not be here for the opening this afternoon. Mr Reid received a telegram from Sydney yesterday, stat ing that they would not be on the Riverina this trip. A consignment of over 100 parrots is expected to arrive by to-day's Sydney boat.

The ceremony of officially opening the Zoo, which will be known as the Beau-maris Zoo, will be performed by the Mayor (Alderman J. A. McKenzie), at 3 o'clock this afternoon. No charges for admission will be made but after to day a small charge will be imposed.
