NEWSPAPER FIGHT IS

ONE OF KEENEST

ADELAIDE is the scene of one of

Australia's keenest newspaper battles.

The "Advertiser," owned by the Melbourne "Herald," has taken the gloves off against News Limited, an independent company controlled by Mr. Rupert Murdoch, son of the late Sir Keith

Murdoch.

News Limited, Adelaide, publishes the "News"

(afternoon daily), the

"Sunday Mail" (weekend), and "Radio Call" (weekly).

In addition, News Ltd. controls the "New Idea," "Life," "Movie Life," and a number of popular adventure magazines for children.

The "News" Monday to Friday circulation has risen from 41,000 to 109,000 net sales, 165%, in the last 15 years. The "Sunday Mail" figure has grown from 75,000 to 171,000, or 126%, in the same period.

They have met competi-tion by "always doing some-thing."

News Limited secured world rights to Sir Donald Bradman on the 1953 Test series at the highest fee ever paid an Australian for a single newspaper feature.

recent vital talks on Indo-China and Korea.

the Continent.

The "News" and the "Sunday Mail" have estab-lished their own correspon-dents in London, Berlin, Athens. Vienna, Paris, Col-ombo, and Singapore.

And staff reporter Denise Norton, former Olympic and Empire Games swimming champion, is in Vancouver with the Australian Empire Games team.

Marjorie Jackson, world champion woman runner, also is a member of the "News" editorial staff.

Among the ever-growing gallery of distinguished con-tributors to the "News" and the "Sunday Mail" are Wal-ter Lippmann, Prof. Walter Murdoch, Douglas Brass, James Cameron, and Crosbie

Morrison.
