LORNE DECLARES "WAR

TO DEATH" ON SHARKS

FISHERMEN fought and killed two big grey nurse sharks at Lorne yesterday.

But a third-a monster, more than 12 ft. long - got away, after straightening a baited

hook.

Man-eating grey nurse sharks are coming into Lorne waters in search of barracouta-and fishermen are worried.

The two man-eaters were killed less than 100 yards from Lorne pier, while more than 200 people watched and 60 people splashed around in

the surf at the nearby Ocean Beach.

At 11 a.m. fishermen saw a baited buoy near the pier dragged under the water.

Two local fishermen - Mr. R. Kaviers and Mr. A Alsop - raced out in a launch, and after circling about for a few minutes sighted a 9ft. grey nurse.

Two well-aimed shots finished the shark - and it was brought to the pier and hung up before a big crowd.

It weighed 600 lb.

At 1 p.m. another shark - an eight-footer - was sighted off the pier and also killed by fishermen.

At 3 p.m. the third - and biggest - took a baited hook near the pier, but struggled so violently that it completely straightened the hook, and raced off.

Lorne fishermen said grimly: "We'll get him - and

others - eventually!"
