ART NEEDS NEW IDEAS

By ARNOLD SHORE

Modern art in Melbourne needs some new ideas, judg-ing by the Contemporary Artists' 1952 show at the Victorian Artists' Society Galleries.

Only six pictures and drawings register among many that echo over familiar stock-in-trade of modernism.

Harry Mitchell catches a breath of humor, perhaps unmeant, in his "Prefab" landscape. Sober quality is used by Alan Sumner in his three European landscapes.

Constance Stokes' "Christ With Simon and Andrew" has richness and feeling. "Bowl of Flowers," by Roma Thompson, is one semi-abstract work that achieves texture, color, and life.

.

Sydney painter Rubery Bennett has extended his palette as a result of a trip to the "Centre." His show at the Sedon Galleries is his best to date.
