VALE BILLY FLINTOFT

Councillor William "Billy" Flintoft, former Mayor of Prahran and brilliant centre player with Melbourne League Football Club before World War 1, died yesterday.

The late Cr. Flintoft played for Melbourne with Dr. Roy Park, Jack Brake, and Billy McKenzie. He was known as the Beau Brum-mel of League football of his day —always dapper on and off the

field.

He played at centre in the semi-final of 1915, when Carlton defeated the Redlegs—as they were then known—by 11 points.

Melbourne then withdrew from the League competition until

1919.

Cr. Flintoft did not play again. For some seasons he was a member of Melbourne Cricket Club's pennant team and later held administrative positions in Melbourne cricket and football clubs.

In 1937 he was a member of the general and finance commit-tees of the Melbourne Cricket Club. He was chairman of the M.C.C. Football Club committee from 1938 to 1949, and had been a Melbourne delegate to the Vic-torian Football League since 1947.

He served as an officer in the 58th Battalion in Egypt and France during the 1914-18 war.

Cr. Flintoft leaves a widow and two sons.

After a service at 1 p.m. today, the funeral will leave Matthews' Funeral Parlors, Toorak rd., South Yarra, for the Springvale Crema-torium.
