'KANGAROO' IN

WRONG ROLE

_

-but put

right

By F. KEITH MANZIE

Can you i mag me hordes of kangaroos descending on Austra-lian villages and mas-sacring the people?

Perhaps you cannot, but thev Hollywood script writer who originally dreamt up the plot of "Kangaroo," first techni-color film to be made in Australia, imagined just

that.

Fortunately the advance crew which arrived to pick Australian locations for the film realised that the script just did not "add up." So now it has been rcwritten> with "Kangaroo-' the name of a bushranger who massacres in a more comprehensible

manner.

Nonie Piper (foremly "Peifer"), Sydney model who plays the lead in the Austra-lian film "Bitter Springs," told this story upon her ar-rival in Melbourne yesterday for the "Bitter Springs" pre-miere at the Majestic Theatre on Friday.

Miss Piper, an( attractive and animated blonde, .has been marked down for a role in "Kangaroo." It will be only a small part, as Maureen O'Hara, Hollywood star (who arrives within a fortnight), will lake all the feminine act-ing plums.

Seeks experience

But Miss^ Piper does not care how small her part is. She wants it principally for the experience of watching how an American company

works.

She has already noted Bri-tish methods in "Bitter Springs" (made by Ealing, of London), and Australian methods in "Into the Straight" (made by the -i McCreadie Bros., of Sydney).

Miss Piper wants all the experience of film work she can get to help her when she visits London in l8 months or so to break into movies there.

In the meantime she is continuing with her model-ling, and is taking up secre-tarial work to tide her over possible delays in obtaining a film job in England. She is also marked down for a part in an Australian stage pro-

duction.

Tomorrow she will visit Cr. Disney, Lord Mayor, and later attend a mannequin parade at the Myer Em-porium.

On Friday night she will be introduced from the stage of the Majestic Theatre.

And on Saturday she will fly back to Sydney.
