I..from Tie ? World

??By PERCY TAYLoll

'l .-b death this week of

-a Mick Maguire, father of the five "Fabulous Maguire" sisters, has shocked Rich-mond Football Club support-

ers.

In his heyday Mick was a good- player for Richmond, and he reached his top about the time of the first world war. He later became licensee of the Bull and Mouth Hotel, in Bourke st., where he entertained his old team at a premiership dinner. The Bull and Mouth disappeared many years

ago.

At that dinner, we heard a song from Mary, the eldesi daughter, who later made her name in an Australian film, and then became a Hollywood star.

Those of us who went to Brisbane on the 1936-37 English cricket tour met most of the family again. They were still in the hotel business at the Belle Vue. However, Mary and her father were then in Holly-wood, but the cricketers stayed at the Belle Vue, and Mrs. Maguire never tired of telling us what a fine man was Douglas Jar-dine.

He and his team also stayed there during thi "bodyline" tour, and the worried Douglas spent a lot of time in the nursery, playing with the Maguire children.

REMINISCENT smiles

perhaps, could have been seen on the faces of Keith Miller and Ian Johnson when they read of the amazing bowling perform-ance in test trial cricket last week of Jim Laker, English off-spinner, who took eight wickets for two runs.

Playing an M C.C. team at Lord's in May, 1948, the Aus-

tralians scored 552. Miller in making 163 scored three 6's and 20 4's, and Johnson scored three 6's and eight 4's in his total of 80.

In that partnership they put on 155 in 103 mins. I can still see the ball sailing out of the ground, when no fewer than nine 6's were scored off Laker on a dead pitch on the second morn-ing of the match.

Several weeks later, in the first test in Nottingham, Laker made top score - 63 - in the first innings for England, and took 4/138 in a score of 509.

Jim, a tall well-built pleas-ant natured player, appears certain to come to Australia this summer, and he should be a most popular member of the side.
