Death of Sydney

Ure Smith

SYDNEY, Tues: Mr Sydney Ure Smith, artist, publisher, edi-

tor, and art entrepreneur, died suddenly in his Potts Point flat early today. He had been in illhealth for more than two years, and had received treatment for a heart disease.

Mr. Smith was born in England in 1887, and came to Melbourne with his parents in that year. His father, Mr John Ure Smith, managed Menzies Hotel, Mel-bourne, and later the Australia Hotel, Sydney.

Mr. Smith was educated at Queen's College. Melbourne, and Sydney Grammar School. When he was 19 he and two other young artists, Harry Julius and Albert Collins, established a commercial art studio, which raised commercial art illustra-tion to a new level in Australia.

His etchings and water-colours hang in galleries in Sydney, Mel-bourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and New York. He edited books on Hilder, Streeton, Blamire Young, Heysen. Lindsay, Grüner, Mar-garet Preston, Lambert, Annand, Friel Friend, Lymburner, and

Dobell.

In 1937 Mr. Smith received the OBE. He is survived by a son and a daughter.
