IN THE THEATRE

Opening The Season

IP there Is any such thing

as a theatre season in Melbourne, it surely begins about Easter, when the nights are drawing in and the open air is losing what is left of its at-traction for months to come. Theatre managers are following precedent this year by opening their hearts and their doors to the public this April and invit-ing them to keep the King's in business besides four othei theatres.

This is something in the nature of an experiment; it is some time since theatre-goers in Mel-bourne have had five . city theatres to choose from. It is also significant that they are not entirely dependent on over-sea stars and oversea plays. Sumner Locke Elliott's Rusty Bugles, which opens at the King's today, is a play by an Australian about Australians, and it will be played by Austra-lians, too.

A little censorship trouble per-haps contributed to the inter-est which was . roused by this play when it was. put on by Doris Fitton's Independent Theatre in Sydney, but this can have had nothing to do with its success over a 20 weeks' season.
