CHRISTMAS

BEER

HOW ASSURED

Melbourne's beer supply for Christmas will be delivered after all.

Yesterday a settlement was made in the dispute between brewery drivers and brewery managements. Drivers will not hold a stopwork meeting on Monday. Instead they will probably work overtime to dis-tribute sufficient beer to pro-vide for holiday demands.

The change in the attitude of drivers took a sudden change late yesterday afternoon. At 3 o'clock an official of the Trans-port Workers' Union said that "there would definitely be a strike next week." At 3.30 the parties were considering a settlement of the dispute. At 6pm it was announced that a stoppage of work had been avoided.

Mr W. Cheney, union secre-tary, said the settlement was reached when brewery man-agements agreed to pay drivers a wage increase of 8/ a week immediately and discuss after the new year a request for ad-ditional increases.

"Because of the brewery managements' offer we believe no good purpose could be achieved in holding the stopwork meeting on Monday. The meeting will not now be held," Mr Cheney said.
