PALM ISLAND ABORIGINAL SETTLEMENT.

- - - - - - - The aboriginal settlement at Hull River, which suffered severely in the cyclone in March of last year, was subsequently transferred to Palm Island. On this island

the population is now about 200, and the mission settlement is stated to be making good progress under Mr. R. H. Curry. A recent visitor to the place mentions that good work is being done in clearing the land and putting it under cultivation with tropical fruits and food crops. A village has been laid out, and most of the inmates are now accom-modated in comfortable dwellings with thatched roofs. It is remarked that these residences are quite as comfortable as were those of many of the white in-habitants who did pioneering work in the early days. The erection of three new cottages is nearing completion. The in-mates appear to be contented and happy, and they are able to supply their daily rations by the means of fish, which abound in the waters around the island. - - - - - - - - -
