AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL AIRLINES APPOINTMENT

Captain A. A. Koch

Captain A. A. Koch, of Sydney, who has had a long career in commercial aviation, has been appointed senior captain of Skymaster training of TransAustralia Airlines. He will begin duty in about a fortnight.

The appointment of Captain Koch was announced by Mr L. J. Brain, general manager, after a meeting of Australian National Airlines Commis-sion in Melbourne yesterday.

Captain Koch, who is 41, holds a first-class navigator's licence and has

been flying for 20 years. He has flown 20 different types of aircraft and has 14,000 fly-ing hours to his credit.

During the war Captain Koch, who was a senior air-lines captain with Qantas Empire Airw a y s, con-tinued in civil air service until the fall

of Singapore. He took an outstand-ing part in evacuating civil personnel from Java. In one of his rescue cam-paigns during 1942 he was shot down by Japanese fighters east of Timor, and although suffering from a broken leg and broken arm he swam ashore, but was made prisoner.
