Sir Edmund Herring, LieutenantGovernor, will open the annual con-ference of the Victorian branch of the Returned Servicemen's League at the Assembly Hall, Julv 24, at 10am. Mr Cain, Premier, will attend at

11.30am.

Mr Makin, Navy and Munitions Minister, who will shortly leave to take up the post of Australian Minis-ter Extraordinary and Plenipoten-tiary in Washington, will attend the Wesley Pleasant Sunday Afternoon on Sunday, when he will be given a public farewell.

Major Peter Spier, architect, who served with the 2nd ALF for six years, has joined the architectural practice of Mr Robert S. Demaine, at Trustees Chambers, 401 Collins st.

Mr J. D. M. Dickson, accompanied by Mr O. A. Thewlis, his overseas sales representative, will leave Mel-bourne today for a business trip to New Zealand. They will travel by plane from Sydney on Tuesday.

Ravenhall, of North Essendon, a member of the Com-monwealth public service for 46 years, retired yesterday. In the war years he was executive officer of the dangerous cargoes movements sec-tion, Department of Supply and Shipping. He was formerly in the Munitions Department and before that in the Defence Department. He was made a presentation yesterday, the gift being handed over by Mr G. T. Chippindall, secretary of the Supply Department. He has been closely associated with the North Melbourne Football Club for many '

years.
