Mrs. George Townsend.

Mrs. Townsend, widow of the late Mr. George B. Townsend, died at her residence, Lutwyche Road, on Saturday last, and was buried at the Lutwyche Cemetery yesterday fore-noon. Mrs. Townsend was, prior to her marriage, Miss Jessie Sinclair, a daughter of the late Mr. John Sin-clair (Smellie and Co., Ltd.), at one time Mayor of Brisbane, and a very well-known citizen. Mr. Sinclair was

Mayor during the visit of the late Prince Edward and Prince George (now His Majesty King George V.) and entertained the Royal party at a ball in the old Exhibition Building, a function of great brilliance. Miss Jessie Sinclair shared with her sis-ter, the duties of hostess. Later she married Mr. George Townsend, who was a Sub-Inspector of Native Police in the Far North, in the early days, and later an officer of the Immigra-tion Department in Brisbane, a son of tile late Captain Townsend, for many years resident at Sandgate. The Townsends, like the Sinclairs, were prominent members of the "Younger Set" in Brisbane in the early eighties. Mrs. Townsend is survived by one son, Noel, who saw service in the Great War, and was for some years in the Northern Territory. He is now a resident of Lutwyche. Seventy three years of age at the time of her death, Mrs. Townssnd may be considered to have been a fairly early Brisbaneite. Her funeral was private, attended by her son and a few relatives and very old friends.
