4BC.

New Wireless Station. AUSPICIOUS OPENING.

Under auspicious circumstance, 4BC, the new broadcasting station, was officially opened on Saturday night, and that It was most success-ful was evidenced by the many con-gratulatory messages received from such distant towns as Cairns and Winton, in this State, and many places In New South Wales and Victoria. The reception was stated to be excellent. Mr. A. M'Donald, chief engineer oi Amalgamated Wireless Ltd., flew from Sydney in order to be present at the function.

The Vice Lord Mayor (Alderman A, Watson), in declaring the station open, said that nothing brought more Joy to people in distant country centres than did wireless, In wishing the station every success he said that thousands of listeners would appreciate the initiative and enterprise that was being shown.

Mr. J. W. Robinson, manager of 4QG, said that the provision of an alternative programme by the new station would increase the popularity of broadcasting. He mentioned that during the last three months 1100 new licenses had been taken out in Bris-bane. The new station was In good hands, because Mr. Chandler always had been a keen radio enthusiast ever since It had been inaugurated in Queensland.

DEVELOPMENT OF RADIO.

Mr. Chandler said that the opening of the station gave him very great pleasure, not only because it meant a great step forward In the development of his business, but also because it would help In the development of radio generally in Queensland. The addi-tional facilities which this station, and perhaps later on other stations, would give to listeners would, he felt sure, enable them to obtain a great deal more pleasure from their receivers through greater variety of programmes.

This station should not be regarded in

any way as a competitor of 4QG, and the presence of Mr. Robinson, the manager of 4QG, there that night to wish them success was most gratifying There would, of course, be some friendly rivalry between the two stations, but It would always be their endeavour to co-operate with 4QG.

"Listeners will all understand," con-tinued Mr. Chandler, "that this is at present a temporary service, as our permanent station Is not yet finished, and probably will not be ready until about October. Meantime, the erec-tion of this temporary service is prob-ably something in the nature of a re-cord. The apparatus for the station only arrived in Brisbane on Friday, the 8th-just eight days ago." Listeners would appreciate the very great assist-ance which had been rendered by The Brisbane Newspaper Company, publish-ers of the "Courier" newspaper, in as-sisting to bring to Queensland the special cricket relay which would be known as the "Courier-4BC Test Cricket Service." The cost of bring-ing that service to Queensland had amounted to some hundreds of pounds a considerable portion of which had been borne by the "Courier."
