Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Munro are in Brisbane, and are staying at Lennon's Hotel.

Mr. and Mrs. B. Clarke (Melbourne) arrived by the Orungal, and are stay-ing at the Hotel Carlton.

Mrs. H. L. Archdall will leave to-morrow for Coolangatta, where she will be the guest of her daughter, Mrs. Gibson.

Mrs. W. Buttner will leave next week on a holiday visit to Tugun.

Among the Southern arrivals by the Orungal yesterday were Mr. and Mrs. W. Reid (Melbourne), who are staying at the Hotel Carlton.

Mrs. Charles Hodgson, of Sydney, is the guest of Mrs. J. G. TenlsonWoods at Trevallyn, Toowong, for a few days.

Miss Lucy Lester (Morton Vale, Gat-ton) is visiting friends in the North, and expects to spend a few days in Brisbane before returning home.

Misses Patricia and Pauline, the little daughters of Dr. and Mrs. P. Crowe, entertained a few of their small friends at a party at their home at New Farm, to celebrate their first and third birthdays recently. Those present included Barbara M'Swain, Bubbles Noble, Moya and Mary Weller, Betty Roache, Karma and Bernadine Grant, and Sheila Albert.

On account of the serious illness of her father, Miss Mignon Maclean's marriage to Mr. Eric Debus, of the Australian Bank of Commerce, will not take place, as previously arranged, but will take place from Mrs. W. Debus' home, Bond-road. Bondi, Syd-ney, on October 28. Miss Mignon Maclean is the guest of her sister, Mrs. G. F. Bohman, of Goulburn, until her marriage takes place.

All Saints' Hall held a large audience on the occasion of the second enter-tainment of the Queensland Society of Magicians held last Friday. The pro-gramme was varied, and the following members of the society took part: Messrs. C. Monzel, G. E. De Vene, T. Alexander, W. J. Stuart, "Roblno," and "The Mystics." The assisting artists were Miss F. Monzel (lady conjuror), Miss Effie Morrison, Messrs. C. V. Woodlands, M. Masterton, E. Wynne, and H. O. Ovenden. The orchestra comprised Messrs. O. Reese, G. D. Drover, and C. Wearne.

A successful social was held in the Foresters' Hall, Paddington, last Tues-day, in aid of the Bardon Football Club (Soccer). The hall had been de-corated with maroon and white stream-ers, the club's colours, and balloons. The social was convened by the ladies' committee, consisting of Mesdames Lansbury, Watson, Charrington, Thorpe, and Brewer. Dancing, com-petitions, and musical items were en-joyed. Mr. Norman Brown gave vocal solos. Competitions were won by Mr. C. Tobin and Miss Barry. The Monte Carlo prizes, donated by Mr. A. Bryett, were secured by Mr. C. Tobin and partner. Mr. Lansbury, on behalf of the club members, presented the sec-retary of the club (Mr. M. Rowe) with a gold wristlet watch, as a mark of their esteem for his untiring efforts for the club's success. Mr. Rowe re-sponded.

Recent visitors at the Hotel Can-berra included Mrs. and Miss Faviell (Sydney), Dr. and Mrs. Minton Conwell (Melbourne), Mr. and Mrs. Ward (Adelaide), Mrs. M. Kaye (Sydney), Misses Sims (Warwick), Clarkson (Ade-laide), Senator Foil (Bundaberg), Messrs. G.- W. Cleverly (Melbourne), F. Emmerson (Toowoomba). S. Yaffe (Melbourne), E. Walsh (Gympie), A. W. Lutch (Gympie), A. E. Clarkson (Adelaide), K. V. Wippell (St. George), M. M'Cosker (St. George), and C. A. Priam (Adelaide).

A well-attended public meeting, under the auspices of the Buranda branch of the Queensland Women's Electoral League, was held last Wed-nesday at the Carl-street Hall, Thompson Estate, for the purpose of hearing Mr. J. G. Bayley, endorsed National candidate for the Oxley Federal division. Mrs. J. H. Goldsmith, J.P., president of the league, was in

the chair, and was presented with a'

large bouquet of roses by Miss Lylia Pegan. Mrs. G. S. Willlden (presi-dent of the branch) was In attend-ance. Mr. Bayley gave an interesting address on the arbitration question and other subjects, and in reply to a question about the John Brown prosecution gave a lengthy and lucid explanation, much to the satisfaction of the audience. Mrs. Irene Longman, M.L.A., also addressed the meeting. Several musical and elocutionary items were appreciated, and ' the artists in-cluded Mesdames Hlley, Ovens, Malone, Misses Pegan and Thora Yorston.

The death took place in a private hospital In Pomona ion Wednesday of Mrs. Ida Hannah Porter (aged 55 years), the wife of Mr. W. A. Porter, who resides near Cooran, after an ill-ness of about a fortnight with influ-enza, from which complications en-sued. The deceased lady, whose maiden name was Birch, was bom at Perth (W.A.), and had resided for 14 years in Queensland, at Yandina, Cooroy. Gympie, and Cooran. She leaves her husband, one son (Mr. A. Porter), and a daughter (Mrs. L. Douglas). The funeral took place to the Pomona-Cooran cemetery yesterday afternoon, the Rev. Ian Nelson officiating.

The death occurred on Tuesday last, at the age of 71 years, of Mrs. Clara Swain, at her residence, Clevelandroad, Morningside, where she had re-sided for the past 27 years. Her husband, Mr. George Swain, pre-deceased her about two years ago. The funeral took place to the Bulimba Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. H. Lilley conducting the service at the graveside. The late Mrs. Swain is survived by a family of two sons and two daughters.
