The election o£ a member of the Cairns Divisional Board took place on Saturday, and the polling resulted as follows :—Hon. V Hood, 33 ; Mr. Lyons, 21. There was considerable excitement over the election. A good deal of interest is being taken over the action of the ratepayers in eudeavouring to oust Mr. Hansford, manager for Burns, Philp. and Co., from lhe Municipal Council. The action has been taken owing to Mr. Hansford's name not appearing on the roll this year, though last year, when he was elected, his qualification was all right. As the voters' roll is altogether incorrect, it is thought that Aldermen Levaux, Bardon, and Lyons, in addition to Alderman Hansford, are not entitled to tit. The reduction in the voting qualification from £120 to £60, rates not paid before the lot November, the revision notice being signed by the Mayor instead of the town clerk, and the details of the roll not being supplied according to schedule 2, are considered to render the election Illegal. The cane throughout the district is look*lng splendid, and there are anticipations of splendid croos at Aloomba. Mulgrave, and Hambledon. No land is now available for farmers at Hambledon. The Mulgrave farmers received 10s. per ion gross for their cane last season. It is understood here that the Hon. T. J. Byrnes will probably be a candidate for this electorate at the next election. At a meeting of the Municipal Council tonight, there was again no quorum, owing to doubts being entertained as to the legality of the last election of aldermen. PORT DOUGLAS. April 13.
