THE WATER TAX.

AYR FARMERS' PROTEST.

AYR, April 19.

Nearly 200 farmers attended the meet-ing of the Kalamia and Pioneer Mill suppliers in the Theatre Delta. Mr. C. R. Crofton was in the chair. The dele-gatcs to the Mackay conference submitted a report. The water tax was discussed at length, strong opposition being ex-pressed to it, and finally the following motion was carried unanimously: "That, failing, to get relief from the Government, we refuse to take out a license." It was also resolved that the shire chairman should be asked to call a public meeting to discuss, the matter. The text of the motion was ordered to be wired to the Council of Agriculture, with the request that it be immediately placed before the Government. The meeting also decided to appoint a permanent full time secre-tary at a salary of £400 a year.
