MEMORIAL UNVEILED AT

' CAIRNS.

CAIRNS, April 28.

lu ? tliu presence of a large gathering, the Mayor (Mr. A. J. Draper), on Anzac Day (Sunday), unveiled the clock tower at the corner of Abbott and Shields streets, in commemoration of the Cairns nnd district fallen soldiers. The monu-ment cost £2074 to erect. The tower, which bears the names of 146 fallen men, is composed of granite, freestone, and marble, and has a height of 41ft. It is surmounted .by . the life size figure of a

soldier, facing the open sea. It was stated | at the unveiling that the memorial wouli have been completed at an earlier date, hut the committee made strenuous search-ing efforts for a striking clock, both in Australia and abroad, but were únanle to obtain one which could be placed m the memorial owing to .tbo design. A non-striking clock was therefore installed. It is now suggested to add a striker, to be situated at a point away from, the

monument. '
