A MEMORIAL PARK.

SOUTH BRISBANE'S TRIBUTE.

OPENED BY LORD FORSTER.

One phase of the work pleased him greatly: An opportunity had been taken by those who directed the con-struction of the park to provide with employment many returned men who were unfortunate enough to be out of

work.

The foregoing remark was made by his Excellency the Governor-General of Aus-tralia (Lord Forster) when opening the South Brisbane Memorial Park yesterday.

His Lordship, who was attended by Cap-tain Mulholland, was received by a guard of honour provided by the Fleet and Boy Scouts. The Fleet was represented by Lieutenants Rourke, Darling and Hall, Commander Mutton (District Naval Offi-cer) was also present. Colonel Cass re-presented the Defence Department.

The Mayor of South Brisbane (Alder-man A. Faulkner) introduced his Excel-lency.

TRIBUTE TO PRESIDENT HARDING.

His Excellency said that before he made any remarks there was a matter to which he must make reference, however brief, for, as they stood there that day in honour of the memory of their own glorious dead, they were moved to sym-pathy for the people of America, in the death of their President. The death of the head of any English-speaking race would always be a matter of concern to the people of the British Empire.

A PLEASING THING.

He was glad to be present to declare the Memorial Park open, for there was something about it, something about the thought which inspired the construction of the park, which he was sure appealed to all of them. It was being beautifully carried out, and he looked forward with great pleasure to seeing the work further advanced, if not completed, when he next visited Brisbane — he hoped next year. The Mayor had told them something of the persistent efforts which had to be made to carry out the work, and he congratulated all concerned on the way the work had been done. He had been told that those who directed the construction of the park had provided with employment many re-turned men who were unfortunate enough to be out of work. He was glad to see that such au opportunity had been taken. He had been requested by the Diggers em-ployed on the work to return to the Mayor and council, the assistant town clerk and engineer, with whom they daily came in contact, their sincerest thanks for the kindness they had received. As the Mayor had told them the work was un-finished, but they could see enough to realise that when it was completed it would be a place of great beauty. It was to the last honour and memory of the men who had assisted to bring about the safety of the British Empire that he had the honour to declare the park open.

The Archbishop of Brisbane (Dr. Sharp) also spoke, and Lord and Lady Forster, and the Mayor and Mayoress of South Brisbane planted trees.
