ROCKHAMPTON, October 22.

At Baralaba yesterday afternoon the Minister for Railways (Mr. Larcombe) turned the first sod of the Baralaba lo Castle Créele railway, leading to the Daw-son Valley irrigation area. This section, ?which is 53 miles long, ia estimated to cost £360,000, Inclusive of rolling stock. The next section will be from Castle Creek to Delusion Creek, a distance of 23 miles A special tram ran from Rock-hampton for the opening ceremony, and was faariy well patronised

In turning the sod Mr Larcombe dwelt on the nossiimhties of the irrigation scheme. He attacked newspaper critics for embarrassing the Government m carrying out Ita schemes. Critics had i castigated the Government for borrowing, but these developmental a:hetnea could not be carried out without loan money; it could net be done by a magical process. Mr Larcombe went on to say that the engineer and staff from the recently completed Mt, Edwards line would com-mence work on Castle Oeck shortly. It had also been stated '.hat when he bad turned the sod of the Many PeaksUpper Burnett railway It was only a formal ceremony, but it waa a reality, as now 1000 men were engaged.
