"BETTER FARMING" TRAIN.

A concise description of the "better farming" train, which will leave Mel-bourne for a tour of the Gippsland dis-trict on Monday, is contained in a book-let published by the Railways Commis-sioners. They refer to the train, not as an exhibition, but as a special farmers' information bureau. The description is justified in that the train will carry experts on every branch of agriculture and dairying. Among them will be the superintendent of Agriculture (Dr. A. E. V. Richardson). There will also be lecturers on domestic science and baby

health matters.

The train will be 670ft. long and will consist of 15 cars and trucks. lt will be equipped with electric light and with living accommodation for the various staffs. A large fodder truck will also be attached. Three of the trucks will be for cattle, containing exhibits demon-strating the points to be achieved in the production of good dairy types. All phases of dairying will be comprehensively demonstrated, A number of purebred specimens of pigs will be carried in an-other truck, and many hints of successful pig-raising will be provided. Another truck will contain a lecture platform. Cars will be provided containing food samples, con-centrates, tables showing comparative fund values, and exhibits demonstration the production of tobacc and potatoes and the proper methods of pasturing. One truck has been attached lo the train fitted with n large number of boxes, each 1ft. square, containing actual sods of growing grasses. The effect of modern pasturing methods is strikingly shown by the com-parison between the top-dressed and un-treated specimens from various parts of

the State.

An interesting addition for the benefit of the wives of country settlers is a car completely fitted for the purpose fo de-monstrating all aspects of practical home management, domestic hygiene, and child welfare. The following timetable is an-
