PINKENBA SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL

A triangular area at the intersection of Mam-road and M'Bnde-road, Pinkenba, was the centre of an inspiring gathering on Saturday, on the occasion of the unveiling by his Excellency the Governor of a memorial stone to the lads from that sector of the Toombul area who had enlisted in the war. The pre sident of the Toombul Shire Council (Councillor J. P Peterson) presided, and the member for Tocmbul (Mr. A Petrie) and Mr Forgan Smith, M L V., were also present, Mr. Smith apologising for the absence of the Premier.The memorial stone beats the inscription : "Erected in memory of the brave men from Pinkenba and district who volun teered to fight in defence of the Empire in the Great War (1914-1918), for freedom, justice, and humanity." His Excellency expressed the pleasure it gave him to unveil a monument of that sort. They must never, anywhere through out the whole Empire, forget the debt they owed to the men who had done so much for all. Messrs A L Petrie, Forgan Smith, Ms L A., Peterson, and D. W. L. Anderson (secretary of the Toombul War Memorial Committee) addressed the enthusiastic audience The little comer had been gaily decorated with flags and bunting, and the Naval Reserve Band, under the conductorship of Mr T P Law, rendered selections. The memorial stone was garlanded with wreaths in honour of the eighty men from the district who had lost their lives at the war. In all 42 men enlisted from the Pinkenba area.
