THE NEW MAYOR OE SOUTH
BRISBANE.
Alderman John Gaffney, the new Mayor of the City of South Brisbane, was born in County Cavan in Ireland, and came to Brisbane about 26 years ago. For a time he had the lot of the average new arrival in a strange land,
but he quickly obtained work, and sub-sequently entered the Queensland Police Force, in which he had 12 years of ser-vice. After resigning from the police force be entered upon the business of hotelkeeping, and is now the lessee of the Ship Inn in Stanley street, South Brisbane. Alderman Gaffney entered municipal politics six years ago, so his elevation to the municipal chair of the second municipality in the State in so short a time is an indication that he has devoted considerable energy to the engrossing subject of local government.
