CREATING SLUMS.

Fitzroy Council Censured.

At a meeting of the Public Health Commission yesterday, comments were made concerning the proposed erect ion of three houses at Fitzroy on land 31ft by

100ft.

The chairman (Councillor Curnow) said that it was a disgrace to the municipality

of Fitzroy that regulations had not been adopted to prevent such congestion. It

was stated in the ensuing discussion that the buildings were approved by a majority of the Fitzroy Council. Councillor Curnow said that the commission had no power under the Health Act to prevent the coun-cil from permitting the erection of three house on such a small block of land. He thought, however, that the commission should enter a protest.

It was decided that a resolution of pro-

test be sent to the Fitzroy Council, describe-ing its action as permitting the creation of slum quarters.
