AUSTRALIAN RULES CARNIVAL.

About 2500 persons gathered at the Brisbane Cricket Ground on Saturday for the opening match of the week's Aus-tralian carnival which the Queensland Football League is running under the auspices of the Australian Football Coun-cil in Melbourne. It was between Col-

lingwood (premiers of Victoria) and South Adelaide (premiers of South Australia.

Four teams —the premier teams of Vic-toria, South Australia, West Australia (Perth), and Tasmania (Canamore)—are taking part in the present campaign in Brisbane, which has for its chief objective the popularising of the Australian game in Queensland, at a cost, those in authority state, of £3500, £400 of which is being borne each by Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia, and £500 by West Aus-tralia, while the Australian Football

Council is backing the enterprise to the extent of a donation of £1480. The coun-cil also has sent up one of its best um-pires, Mr.Tim Lane, of Melbourne to referee the matches. A goal kicking com-petition prior to the match was won by Anderson, of Collingwood, who kicked 72 yards.

Iingwood, Laxton kicking a goal. Goals were also kicked for this team by Hun-tingdon, Gidd, Curtis and Wilson, while Wallace, Gettings and Anderson re-gisted goals for South Adelaide. The scores at the close of the quarter were Collingwood 5 goals 2 behinds (32 points); South Adelaide, 3 goals, 2 be-hinds (20 points). In the second quarter Clarke and Treadea scored goals for South Adelaide and Wilson for Collin-wood. The quarter ended with the scores:

Collingwood 6 goals, 3 behinds; South Adelaide, 5 goals, 5 behinds. In the third quarter Collingwood's number of goals was increased to 8 by the agency of Seddon and Laxton, and South Adelaide's number to 7 by the agency of Clarke and Wind-sor, and the close of this period saw the scores: South Adelaide 7 goals, 8 be-hinds; Collingwood 8 goals, 6 behinds. The third quarter was most exciting, and the match eventually ended in a draw, the final scores being: Collingwood 9 goals 7 behinds (61 points); South Adelaide, 8 goals, 13 behinds (61 points).
