BALLAST TRAIN COLLIDES WITH

CATTLE.

SEVERAL TRUCKS DERAILED.

MILES, August U.

The first serious accident on the Miles-Taroom railway construction, which hitherto had been remarkably free from accidents, occurred this evening about 5 o'clock. A ballast train was returning from up the line, and had reached a place 131 miles from Miles. The train was travelling with hopper trucks in front, with a plough waggon load-ing. There were four persons on tho plough truck, and as the train was coming down a steep Incline con-siderable dust was raised from the empty hoppers. At a critical moment, when there was a cloud of dust in front of the train, some cattle crossed the line, and a colli-sion occurred. The trucks were de railed, with the result that two men were killed and another injured. The fourth escaped with a few scratches.

The killed were :

Thomas Fleming, timekeeper, and A Russian named Carnachanko.

The Injured man is Frederick Howard.

As soon as news of the accident reached the main camp Dr. Craw-ford, of the Miles Hospital, was summoned, and was speedily on the scene, travelling out by trolley. After rendering first aid to the Injured man, and the line had been cleared, both the dead and injured were brought to Miles by train, arriving about 8 o'clock. ' ' ,

Howard's injuries are only slight. Mr. Fleming leaves a widow and a grown up family who live at Red Hill, Brisbane. He was an old rail-way servant on construction works, and had had several previous nar-row escapes.
